Many people install solar electricity to either reduce or eliminate their $600 to $1000 electric bills.  In many cases their own utility company is doing everything possible to slow them down and we want to explain the reasoning… it’s likely different than you think!

Since California and Arizona are solar rich and they allow 2 way flow of electricity a fact of life has become unstable voltage levels.  The reliable power grid we all enjoy was initially designed to carry power to our home and very little consideration if any was given to the idea of power flowing from the home to the grid.  That is what is currently happening and it’s causing unintended consequences like voltage fluctuations, overloaded circuits and burnt lines that are leading to both brownouts and blackouts!  These issues are neither minimal or infrequent and every time one of these issues crop up it costs money and the one writing the check is the utility company.

In an era where the demand for power is softening the supply of solar is soaring.  In America today there are about 600,000 residential solar systems and that number is expected to grow to north of 3 million by 2020!  When that day comes we will have plenty of power and minimal demand.  Another factor that will likely influence all of this is combining solar with batteries.  If you are able to afford it and it makes sense you will be able to completely escape from the grid with this technology.  It’s possible that government influence in the form of legislation will impact this advance and only time will reveal that next step.

As we stated, the demand for electricity is softening as we get better at using energy saving appliances and making our homes work more economically.  Between heating and air conditioning I can explain almost 40% of your annual power bill.  In the summer if your home stays cool and your air conditioner doesn’t kick on your meter doesn’t move.  That alone pays for a lot of upgrades.
